Mad Journalist Syndrome

On the 14th January, Simon Jenkins published an article online at the Guardian’s Comment is Free section entitled: “Swine Flu is as Elusive as WMD. The Real Threat is Mad Scientist Syndrome.”, in which he criticised both scientists and the government for what he saw as scare tactics and misinformation in the handling of the swine flu [...]

Simon Jenkins Versus The ‘Bishops’ of Science (Mad Journalist Syndrome – Part 2)

Back in February, I wrote this blogpost in response to a Simon Jenkins opinion piece in the Guardian’s Comment is Free section, in which he accused scientists of scaremongering over the swine flu pandemic. My particular issue with the article (I had many) was Jenkins’ suggestion that because things didn’t turn out as badly as [...]

Balticon: Scientifical and Real Mad Scientists

Balticon is a conference done by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society. I was asked to participate in their new mini-skeptic track that was developed by Marv Zelkowitz of the National Capital Area Skeptics (NCAS). I thought it was a success. Throughout the day I was there, on Sunday, I saw a big skeptical respresentation. But, also, [...]

I’m not mad

Categories: musings

Tags: anxiety, illness, mental, shameful, stigma

I am a bit disappointed in myself. I have refused to write publicly on my personal blog, or any other blog about my mental health because I was scared that people who don’t like me would use it to attack me with. ‘She’s mad, see?’, ‘She isn’t all there…’ Or, even worse, I might get [...]

Good Girls

It’s hard when you fall if you’re the one who has always been well behaved. You aren’t used to people being mad at you. Disliking you, yes. But mad? No. Not for more than those minor annoyances that occur when people know each other very well and/or spend too much time together. So even though [...]

"Electromagnetic hypersensitivity." Is the NHS going barking mad?

The UK Health Protection Agency reviewed treatments for electromagnetic hypersensitivity, and success was reported with "neutralizing chemical dilution, antioxidant treatment, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acupuncture and Shiatsu".

Say what??

The Health Protection Agency is an independent UK organisation that was set up by the government in 2003 to protect the public from threats to their health from infectious diseases and environmental hazards.

It does this by providing advice and information to the general public, to health professionals such as doctors and nurses, and to national and local government.

From April 2013 the HPA will become part of Public Health England.

Bad PR: The Huge Weekend That Never Was

Put aside those petty squabbles in the pub, lay to rest your arguments about tiny flags and sportswear bans and stop worrying about how it’s Political-Correctness-gone-mad-next-they’ll-have-us-all-speaking-bloody-Muslim-or-something, because it’s now officially official – England is the most ‘footie’ mad country in the world. The Mad Skeptic Mobile App Lives!

Guess what?!

Never mind.  You read the title.  Didn't you.  Well, in case you didn't, there is now a Mad Skeptic Mobile App.  It's free, has no adds, and is swanky in a way that makes you want to cry.  Did I mention it includes artwork by my daughter?

If you have an iPhone, you're shit out of luck if you want a dedicated app.  Apple requires a $99 fee for someone to put out a free app.  I when I read that, I remembered one of the reasons I hate Apple as much as I do, right before reason #3 (users buy computers to be expensive fashion accessories) is good 'ole #2 -- Apple is a bunch of money grubbing douchebags.  Sorry.  It has to be said.  Don't fret though.  If you have an iPhone and want my words in your pocket, you can use the mobile site (link below).

Currently, the App lives for Android and Nokia as well as the mobile site.  Click on the appropriate QR and be whisked away to a magical land where fairies bash [...]

About Skepticator

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it

Paying the bills
