Skepticator

Recently, I stumbled on this website: http://skepticator.com/ What it does is compile blog posts from 720 different skeptical blogs and returns the latest 20 posts. It’s an interesting way to find new articles and authors. It’s nice to get a short summary for each entry without needing to click on it, too (instead of just [...]

Welcome Skepticator

Let us all welcome a new addition to the skeptical blog family….kinda. Called The Skepticator this is a feed aggregator which gathers entries from all kinds of skeptical blogs into one feed for people to peruse, kinda like Skepfeeds just much bigger and automated. Of course here at Skepfeeds the selection of entries from other [...]

Improvements to Skepticator

When last I posted about Skepticator, it was a raw, fresh-faced little website with a few command-line apps behind it drawing content. It had something like 64 feeds aggregated, and was ticking along slowly with about 1000 posts to look through. But there was no easy way to actually dig for content. It was a very linear experience, and if you wanted just the latest Skeptical commentary, that was fine.

But that's not why I started it. So, since I last posted, I've been working away like mad to make Skepticator much, much cooler.

Skepticator For Mobile Devices pilot version hits the web

Yes, if you have a mobile device, hit up http://m.skepticator.net/ to view the latest news from the skeptisphere. GWT will be added later, as will search capability.

Here we see it running on my slightly battered HTC Touch Pro. It's the basic basic theme as its big brother, with the rounded corner fripperies removed and the left-hand navigation gone, ad it also cuts down on showing the opening paragraphs of stories, just the title, where it's from and when it appeared. It's also the first of my sites to go out on .NET 4.0.

At the moment, it's ad-free as I've not yet found a good way of getting an ad onto the small format screen, but well, if it drives adoption of the main site, that's fine by me.

Any time now, Skepticator will hit 50,000 articles

See that magic number? 49,958 articles.

I registered the Skepticator.com name on 14 February 2010, and the site launched a while after that*. Since then, the Extracticator robot has crawled far more articles than I expected, and I've found far more skeptical content than I ever knew about - even with my stated policy of going slow on the specifically atheist content.

Now, to be a skeptic about this - it's actually 50,000 unique URLs rather than articles - I know of a few duplicate articles, but the engine has no sensible way of knowing that an identically worded article exists in two different URLs with ever-so slightly different text. I'm hoping I can come up with a solution for that eventually, but I certainly don't think it detracts from the milestone.

Adding to this success, Skepticator is sponsoring the

This song was written for the Skepticator Live skeptics open mic night side event for TAMoz. If a recording of that show surfaces I’ll be sure to share the stripped down version, but for now you have to put up with the extended studio mix. It was meant mostly in jest, and any references to [...]

About Skepticator

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
