Eric Hovind just can't help lying

Remember how I told you that Eric Hovind was giving away free DVDs for Valentine's Day? And you all rushed over to place your order, and you got the sad notification?

We're sorry, the Valentine's DVD is now out of stock. Thanks to supporters like you, over 2,000 people will get to hear the gospel message!

We pray that the Holy Spirit will use these DVDs to bring people to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Awww, out of stock. Oh, well, that's fair enough, you thought, and you turned away to go back to the kitchen and turn the roast-baby-on-a-spit some more. But wait! There's something mysterious going on here!

Try this. Click on this link

Action item: Counter the Anti-Vaxers

Via Pharyngula and Podblack:

The State Library is hosting an anti-vaccination event tonight, 1 June 2010 with Meryl Dorey of the so-called 'Australian Vaccination Network'. They'll be promoting their noxious brand of pseudoscience. Alt-Med is always a problem, but in this case, the stakes are higher. They tell worried parents that they'll be harming their children by vaccinating them, when in fact the risk of death and disability from disease is much higher without vaccination than with. So more WA kids are going to die as herd immunity diminishes.

Your orders: meet Kylie (along with me and the Perth Skeptics) at the coffee shop at the State Library at 6:00 tonight. Let's spread some good information.

A good [...]

City Lights: Billings blessed with spectacle of mix of beliefs

By Ed Kemmick.

"A journalist, author, critic and debater, Hitchens is one of those distinctly British intellectuals who seems to have read everything and forgotten nothing. In his columns, essays and books, in his speeches and impromptu public appearances, he is incapable of uttering or writing a boring sentence."

Cyber-Monday?

It doesn't seem quite fair to me, but it appears that Lulu (where my book is available) is having a CyberMonday sale--today only, 25% off any purchase (30% off purchases of $750 or more, for anyone who wants to buy 38 copies of my book). To those people who already have their copies on the way--I'm sorry; I honestly didn't know they were going to do this.

My question is, are they lowering the price by cutting authors' commissions? Or is that sheer paranoia on my part?

Anyway... they say the code for today is CYBER25 to get the discount. You should all try it out, and get your shopping out of the way early.

The Cyber Monday shoppers
Could find savings on some whoppers
If they buy a giant flat-screen, or a Kindle or a Nook
They could click away at clothing
Or computer gear with loathing

Animal Cruelty • Hinch vows to end 'cruel' puppy farm trade

High-profile broadcaster Derryn Hinch says shops should stop selling pets in order to shut down the "cruel and brutal" puppy farm trade.

Hinch, who will be speaking at a rally against puppy farms in Melbourne on Sunday, joined the fight against the industry after suspecting his own cavoodle came from one.

Animal activists have long called for a ban on puppy farms, which see dogs used as breeding machines for profit.

They argue the dogs on the farms often live in filthy and cramped conditions, their coats are often matted with faeces and they get no veterinary attention when they are suffering.

In the worst cases dogs are kept in tiny cages with little human contact and they develop physical and psychological problems.

The testimonial of Hollie Quinn: The Huffington Post promotes breast cancer quackery right before Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I hate The Huffington Post. I really do.

Why, you ask, do I hate HuffPo so? I hate HuffPo so because of its history from the very beginning of its existence of promoting the vilest forms of anti-vaccine quackery and pseudoscience. It's because, over the last couple of years, not content with being the one-stop-shop for all things antivax on the Internet, right up there with Whale.to, Mercola.com, and NaturalNews.com, HuffPo branched out very early into quantum quackery, courtesy of Deepak Chopra. Just search for "Huffington Post" and "Deepak Chopra" on this blog and you'll discover how many times I've blogged about this over the last five years. Search all of ScienceBlogs using the same search terms, and you'll see that I'm not alone in having castigated HuffPo for giving voice to Choprawoo and its assault on medicine, neuroscience, [...]

A glowing irony

As I write this, I'm told that there are eleven water cannon vehicles heading to the disaster-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, to attempt to cool down nuclear material that is exposed and exuding (I dare not use the word "leaking" lest I be thought an alarmist) radiation at a rate that seems to be as alarming to the engineers and nuclear experts on the scene as it is assuaging to the arm-chair nuclear engineers in the US and elsewhere who are telling us that Fukushima is no more dangerous than eating a seedless grape.

The following conversation was heard in the Japanese Police Department's motor vehilce shop where the water cannon vehicles are kept.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm arming these water cannon vehicles."

"What for?"

"The police have been ordered to take these 11 vehicles out. They need to be ready immediately."

"What are they use for?"

"This:"

Have A Nice Day

People often complain about being 'ordered' to have a nice day by shop assistants or coffee shop workers or pretty much anyone American.

I'm no grammar nazi but here's the thing. 'Have a nice day' is not an imperative, an order. It's a subjunctive, expressing a hope or wish (it also has other uses).

Other examples of this use of the subjunctive [...]

Women cane morality police - Maryam Namazie - Maryam Namazie

Islamists have been harassing shop owners and female customers in rural towns around Egypt for ‘indecent behaviour’ and enforcing Sharia law. Shop owners have been told they can no longer sell ‘indecent’ clothing, barbers can no longer shave men’s beards, and customers ordered to veil and threatened with severe punishment if they did not abide by ‘God’s law on earth’.

Okay yes, I know business as usual… But when they burst into a beauty salon in the Nile delta town of Benha and ordered the women to stop what they were doing or face physical punishment, the women struck back, whipping them with their own canes before kicking them out to the street.

Now the ‘moderates’ will tell you that these are the acts of mere vigilantes. But that is how it always starts. The ‘vigilantes’ are at least more honest. They point to the al Nour party’s win of nearly 30% of parliamentary seats as giving [...]

Pink Blogging

Pharyngula started quite a storm over at scienceblogs, with tons of responses to his post about pinkified science toys for girls, and how they aren't as powerful as the black/blue/not pink protodude models. Other science bloggers have weighed in on the enpinkened toys and the comments are plentiful. I blogged about the weird gender divided toys that used to be unisex in a post awhile back, but reading some of the comments at pharyngula make me think that I didn't quite understand what most people think to be my beef with said toys.

In the case of these girl toys, the implications of girly inferiority are extremely obvious because they build it into the specs available. The equality of the toys isn't the only thing [...]

My New Old Blog

Before joining Scienceblogs.com, I blogged independently at "Evolution ... not just a theory anymore." That was a cool name for a blog, but I didn't transfer the name to Scienceblogs because there were already a whole bunch of blogs with "Evolution" in the name. There was a lot of stuff on that blog, mostly not worth saving but a few items of possible interest. Also, I've kept a number of things on that site that don't really fit here at the scienceblogs.com site, such as lots of links to books I like, a few downloadable research papers, and so on.

Over recent months, "Evolution ... not just a theory anymore" has been increasingly vulnerable to nasty attacks from the usual suspects, even though it is just sitting there minding its own business. It turns out that upgrading the very old wordpress installation is tricky, and transferring the database to a new installation is a fool's errand, especially given that half the junk on the old site is junk. More than half. [...]

Necropants, The Pants Made From Human Flesh

The Believing Brain - Michael Shermer - michaelshermer.com & Scientific American

Why science is the only way out of the trap of belief-dependent realism

WAS PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA BORN IN HAWAII? I find the question so absurd, not to mention possibly racist in its motivation, that when I am confronted with “birthers” who believe otherwise, I find it diffcult to even focus on their arguments about the difference between a birth certificate and a certificate of live birth. The reason is because once I formed an opinion on the subject, it became a belief, subject to a host of cognitive biases to ensure its verisimilitude. Am I being irrational? Possibly. In fact, this is how most belief systems work for most of us most of the time.

We form our beliefs for a variety of subjective, emotional and psychological reasons in the context of environments created by family, friends, colleagues, culture and society at large. After forming our beliefs, we then defend, justify and rationalize them with a host of intellectual reasons, cogent arguments [...]

Little Shop of Horrors @ Western Stage @ Hartnell

Monterey County Skeptics

One of my favorite musicals of all time.  I'm broke but willing to pony up $20 to see this.  The Western Stage has always done a terrific job (I haven't been in a couple years but I used to go several times a year).  The play starts at 4pm and I'm suggesting maybe dinner after at the Penny Farthing (in old town Salinas) and then on to the play.

In order to get tickets together we would need to have one person purchase them.  I don't mind doing that if you send me the money to paypal in advance.

If we get enough interest we can set a deadline for the money to arrive.  Anyone who decides to go after that day will just have to purchase their ticket on their own and sit separately.

The Short Agenda

I am currently being harried, vilified and persecuted in certain sections of the media about the policy of my bed and breakfast establishment, Tall Towers, of not allowing short people to stay.

It's true there is a sign in the lobby that says You Must Be At Least This Tall To Stay Here and that no one under five foot ten is welcome. It's true that Tall Towers is registered as a business for tax and Health & Safety. But it is also my home. And in my own home, it is my right to follow my own deeply held beliefs. As my website states: I have few rules but please note that out of a deep regard for height, I prefer to let double accommodation to tall people only. I will not allow short people to share a bed under my roof in which they might procreate more short people.

David Gaiman

Copypasta from Wikipedia:

David Bernard Gaiman (1933 – 7 March 2009[1]) was a prominent British member of the Church of Scientology. He and his wife Sheila joined Scientology in the early 1960s and Gaiman served as public relations director and was commonly in the media during the British controversies over Scientology in the 1960s and 1970s.

Gaiman's family is of Polish Jewish origins; after emigrating from the Netherlands in 1916, his father eventually settled in the Hampshire city of Portsmouth on the south coast of England and established a chain of grocery stores. Born in 1933, Gaiman was educated at The Portsmouth Grammar School, though he did not excel academically. He subsequently joined the British Army where he rose to the rank of sergeant. He returned to Portsmouth on leaving the army to work for his father in the grocery stores, though he detested this job.[2]

He married Sheila [...]

About Skepticator

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
