You Didn’t Have An Out-Of-Body Experience

While I was gone last week, Nightline ran a segment about out-of-body experiences and Bob Woodruff interviewed atheist superwoman Margaret Downey for a perspective that doesn’t involve the supernatural. She sets him straight about why those visions occur, politely counters … Continue reading →

Alkalize your body? No thanks

Recently it seems that there’s a new scam out there.   For years, there have been various quacks out there saying that we need to “energize,” “detoxify” or “rebalanced” our bodies, but now there are many who think the answer is to “alkalize” the body. To this end, a number of products have been pushed [...]

by Kevin Bridges Article ID: 1410 What do you think of when you hear the words “out of body experience”? Perhaps you imagine an ill-fated victim of a car accident, a spirit floating inside an ambulance looking down at EMTs as they try frantically to revive his broken, unconscious body. ziztur.com: Evidence of the Afterlive; I'm Skeptical - Introduction, Pt. 2

This is possibly the most important portion of the Introductory chapter.  Here, Jeffrey Long looks at the twelve most common aspects of a NDE, according to his research.  These are:

1.  Out-of-body experience (OBE):  Separation of consciousness from the physical body.
2.  Heightened senses.
3.  Intense and generally positive emotions or feelings.
4.  Passing into or through a tunnel.
5.  Encountering a mystical or bright light.
6.  Encountering other beings, either mystical beings or deceased relatives or friends.
7.  A sense of alteration of time or space.
8.  Life review.
9.  Encountering unworldly ("heavenly") realms.
10.  Encountering or learning special knowledge.
11.  Encountering a boundary or barrier.
12.  A return to the body, either voluntary or involuntary.

He goes into a bit of detail for each.

Body, Mind, Wallet

Anyone up for an outing to the Mind Body Wallet festival this time around? I caught the posters in time this year.

The event is on the last weekend in February and has a $10 entry.

I may or may not be here for it. I've put the word out in Wellington that I'm heading that way. If I get any takers on the backpacking thing then I'll be up there. So, I'm also looking for someone to step up and coordinate this should that happen.

Anyone interested in an outing to see what the other side believe in?

Why out-of-body and near-death experiences don’t prove God

Alex Lickerman is a physician at the University of Chicago who, until recently, was in charge of all primary care doctors at the hospital (he’s now head of student health).  He’s also a secular Buddhist who writes about medicine and matters “spiritual” at his website, “Happiness in this world.” (Alex also helped bring Sam Harris [...]

Constructing Bodies

This January I’m working on a project about gender and religion, and this last week I’ve been reading Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble. It’s been making me think about all sorts of assumptions that we hold and while I haven’t sorted out all my thoughts on the matter, I thought I’d just throw out some of [...]

What is r/skeptic's views on Out-of-body-experiences?

I'm entirely a skeptic on pretty much any spiritual idea, but out-of-body experiences have been confusing me. There have been many stories of patients under the knife who are completely unconscious, but have been known to recall many events that happened during the surgery.

For example, I watched a Nat-Geo documentary about consciousness. There was a man undergoing heart surgery who said that he saw the surgery "from the ceiling" and that he was able to recall specific events that no unconscious person could know.

There are many other stories similar to this...

Out of My Mind

About Skepticator

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
