The post-exam blogging Holiday Junction – or – Future plans for Homologous Legs

My last exam, Biochemical Regulation of Cell Function, finished a bit over an hour ago, at the time I’m writing this. Three months of holidays! Three months. That’s how much holidays I have now: it’s quite a bit, I think you’ll agree. And because I’ve been neglecting the blog a little due to all the studying I’ve been doing, I want to clarify what you should expect to see up here over that period. You see, I’m at a crossroads with regard to what I should write about over [...]

A Skeptical Chat With…Jack Scanlan of ‘Homologous Legs’

This is a blog series where I interview writers, bloggers, podcasters, etc. about topics relevant to science, skepticism, and critical thinking. Today I speak with Jack Scanlan about his website called Homologous Legs, his podcast “The PseudoScientists” and he answers my questions regarding his interest in Evolution, rebutting Intelligent Design articles, and skepticism. Metablogging about skepticism on Homologous Legs

Everyone loves metablogging, and if you don’t, you probably have no idea what it is. To metablog is to blog about blogging — how could that not be a fascinating topic? A good metablog every once in a while allows you to look at what your blogging focus is, how effectively you’re managing that focus, [...]

Phillips and Zwartz explode over the Global Atheist Convention

The past week has been mightily busy, so sorry for not writing on Homologous Legs at all. But I have a good excuse – the Global Atheist Convention was held in Melbourne from the 12th to the 14th of March, and I was one of the volunteers. This meant that I had to hold up [...]

Light Sunday reading – The Panda’s Thumb’s review of Meyer, S.C. 2004

Normally I’m not a fan of tracking back through the archives of blogs that I follow, but I’m prepared to make a big exception with The Panda’s Thumb, a group blog focused on evolutionary biology and its cultural and religious detractors. In a way it’s like Homologous Legs, except older, better and the people who write it know exactly what they’re talking about – PhDs in biology abound.

This gem of an article comes from way back in August of 2004, after Stephen C. Meyer published his controversial paper, The origin of biological information and the higher taxonomic categories, in the journal Proceedings of the Biological Society of [...]

A skeptical chat with… me!

Chris Lindsay of the Michigan Skeptics Association blog has a regular series of posts where he “interview[s] writers, bloggers, podcasters, etc. about topics relevant to science, skepticism, and critical thinking”, and I was his latest victim subject interviewee. We talked about this blog, the process of engaging with ID proponents and creationists on the Internet, my first introduction to anti-evolutionism and many other (unrelated) topics, such as the Pseudo Scientists podcast and TAM Australia.

So if, for some reason, you feel like knowing [...]

That’s right, selected articles from Homologous Legs will be appearing every second Tuesday on the community blog of Vibewire Youth Inc., an Australian non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the voices of young people on important issues. It was wonderful to be asked to contribute to this growing community and hopefully people will enjoy my take on science and skepticism.

My new Nature Education post, on genetically engineered solar bacteria

On Monday I mentioned that I’ve been asked to start writing for the Nature Education blog Student Voices. Well, my first post has been published, entitled Engineering Solar Bacteria, and it’s all about taking genes from marine bacterioplankton and putting them in E. coli, allowing them to use light as an energy source! A fascinating topic, something I might cover in more detail on Homologous Legs in the future.

Here’s a little taste:

Wouldn’t life be so much easier if we didn’t have to regularly eat [...]

Thoughts on the first three chapters of Dembski and Witt’s “Intelligent Design Uncensored”

As mentioned, I have a couple of pro-ID books that need to be read and reviewed these holidays: Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design by Stephen C. Meyer, and Intelligent Design Uncensored by William Dembski and Jonathan Witt. While I’ve done preliminary readings of both books, in order to grasp their overall structure and scope, I recently started reading the latter in a greater level of detail.

What I’ve found has not been pretty.

Yes, Intelligent Design Uncensored is not a very healthy book to read, [...]

Tabletop Transitional – SMBC on education standards

Education, people! IT MATTERS.

Replace the movie with a biology test about evolutionary theory, and if the Discovery Institute gets its way, similar problems might occur: “Not phylogenetic analysis! Homology is the work of design, not a natural biological process!”

About Skepticator

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
