Delusional disorder: Part III

Continuing the series (see Part I and Part II), that attempts to explain why people object to science, I want to clarify a few things. First, my suggestion they suffer from a delusional disorder is in no way a scientific observation. It is only my contention that the criteria for mass psychosis appear to cover most of the anti-science movement. Calling it delusional is merely my way of describing a certain characteristic: the dismissal of anything (read: scientific evidence) that contradicts the anti-science [...]

The Magic of Reality for iPad RIGHT NOW

You can download the app today for £9.99…and the price of your iPad, of course, but all the cool kids have one of those already.

Dang, I was feeling so special because I had the book on Friday and the rest of America wasn't going to have it until 4 October, and now it turns out I was only 3 days ahead of you all.

Primates on the loose! (Uncaged Monkeys: The 'truth')

What follows is essentially a paradoxical attempt at self-promotion via the technique of self depreciation. Feel free to read a few lines and then resume the search for horrific animal-based porn that brought you here by accident (this is, in fairness, how I get most of my blog hits). But anyway, here’s some news that I got quite a while ago now, but just haven’t had the time or inclination to report it properly here. But now I do. So I am. With me so far?

My limited, unexpected and already clearly over-stretched appeal seems to be based on two things. 1: People’s surprising tolerance for overly-descriptive and grammatically [...]

An email to the university of Glamorgan

Recently, I found out about this. As a Scientist, Skeptics-in-the-pub organiser (fingers crossed), and former pupil of an underfunded state-school for which Glamorgan University was the main port of call post A-levels, I did not like this. But I am a fair man, and a true scientist must be open to evidence. So after searching around the website for a bit and coming up with nothing useful, I sent the following email.
(I'm aware it's ridiculously flippant and borderline insulting, but that it addressed at the end)

Since Carlile isn't reporting for now...

Since Lord Carlile's report and its recommendations aren't going to see the light of day for a good long time yet, I think it would be a good idea to have a think about what his recommendations ought to be. I made some suggestions to Lord Carlile as to what recommendations should be in his report. Since we won't know for months yet whether he has accepted them, I'm going put them here instead.

Although these recommendations are directed at St. Benedict's, the procedural failings in safeguarding at St. Augustine's are very similar, so parents of children at both schools might be interested.

Here is the first recommendation

The Child Protection Policy for the school shall bereplaced entirely with one based on a model policy implementing best practice and complying fully with the recommendations of the London Safeguarding [...]

My THIRD application for a job as a Homeopath

I really should stop doing this, I've tried it twice already.
But then, NHS Taynside (or possibly Dundee in this case, it's not clear, Scotland at any rate) are persisting with squandering the ever-diminishing supply of public funds on homeopathy which, I think it may have been mentioned elsewhere, has a limited degree of effectiveness, shall we say.

I get e-mail

Got this today, sent out to academic and academic-related staff in my department:

Dear All,

Please find attached NSS results by Faculty, School and JACS Level 3 subjects. Also included is a mapping document to accompany the JACS report to assist you in understanding which programmes of study are included under each heading. The Word document, 'APPENDIX 06-Surveys - NSS Table EPS.doc' shows the data that will be included in the OPR documentation.

Please note that the data is FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY.

I have no idea what NSS, JACS or OPR mean, so this e-mail makes no sense to me [...]

About Skepticator

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
