Fundamentalists enraged over being required to teach science

Unbeknownst to most South Australians it has been possible, until very recently for independent Christian schools to teach creationism as part of the science curriculum.  That sad and sorry state of affairs has been altered.  The South Australian Non-Government Schools Registration Board has made a policy decision to remove the teaching of creationism from the [...] Related posts:

Greens to push for counsellors over chaplains in schools

Dan Harrison from the Age reports that:

THE Greens want to scrap the national school chaplaincy program and replace it with a scheme to help schools employ counsellors and community liaison officers.

Currently we have a scheme in Australia where religious chaplains are funded in state schools.  There is a thin veneer of equality – applying this [...] Related posts:

NSW Government allowing religious to influence secular ethics trial for non believers

According to the Sydney Morning Herald:

VERITY FIRTH[Education Minister] is refusing to guarantee a 10-week trial for secular ethics classes will start next week in state primary schools as expected, after a flurry of complaints from religious leaders.

How much is a flurry, should we be thankful its not an kerfuffle?

1.5 million to celebrate Mary Mac’s promotion

The Brethren bunker

The Sydney Morning Herald reports… “The secretive religious sect Exclusive Brethren has proposed a rural site on the NSW Central Coast for its newest 800-seat church, but locals are against the plan. Residents in Lisarow, north of Gosford, have organised a public meeting for Saturday against the proposed development. The group, Lisarow Residents Against Inappropriate Development (RAID), says [...]

National Day of Secularism

EoR has mentioned the political activities of the ostensibly non-politcal Exclusive Brethren before. The Australian Electoral Commission has also taken an interest:

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) will announce today it is referring questions to the federal police about whether members of the sect lied about their links to the election campaign. The AEC has been following the source of money used to pay for pro-Liberal and anti-Greens advertisements and leaflets worth $370,000 in Tasmania, South Australia and Mr Howard's Sydney seat of Bennelong, shortly before the 2004 election, Fairfax said. A $10 company set up three weeks before the poll and deregistered 18 months after it was one of the top five "third party" political spenders in the poll. The company, Willmac Enterprises, was set up by Sydney man Mark Mackenzie, a member of the sect.

About Skepticator

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
