Vaccination: Making the right choice seminar with Meryl Dorey

A strange scene unfolded in the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday in a run down hanger on an abandoned air strip just outside of Bungalow NSW. Meryl Dorey was preparing for her Perth seminar, Vaccination: Making the right choice. All night trucks and vans had been delivering the Myths and Lies Meryl would be using in [...]

Meryl Dorey to lie about mercury and vaccinations in perth.

Meryl Dorey head of the deceptively named and widely discredited Australian Vaccination Network is returning to Perth for another round of lies and bullshit. The Anti-vaccination group is going to hold a seminar called "VACCINATION:MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE" however Meryl Dorey intends to repeat the same lies an discredited information that she has become infamous for. Including the claim that vaccines contain Mercury.

It's true that some vaccines use thimerosal as a preservative, but the mercury found in thimerosal is ethylmercury which is safely discharged from the human body it is a very safe preservative, which is why it's use in the first place. However mercury can also be bound as a methyl and methylmercury is dangerous to [...]

No, it’s not the title of the AVN presidents upcoming childrens book. It’s Meryl Dorey’s endorsement of homeopathy as a valid form of childhood vaccination. Meryl appeared on Perth radio station 6PR on July 19th in an attempt to promote an upcoming AVN seminar.  Whilst host Howard Sattler stated repeatedly that he may not agree [...]

AVN to hold seminar in State Library of WA

The AVN has succeeded in securing a venue for a seminar for tomorrow in the State Library of WA. They were previously scheduled to hold their seminar in Perth in a venue in the Uniting church on 14 May 2010, but got cancelled on the day Meryl was supposed to hold the seminar. She was rather belatedly advised of the cancellation as she was about to board the plane in Qld to get to Perth for the seminar.

The Uniting church cancelled Ms Dorey's seminar after receiving quite a few emails pointing out the disinformation and potential security issues that such a seminar would entail. The Uniting church took the concerns seriously, whereas the State Library of WA more or less took the position that the AVN are entitled to their freedom of speech.

"Freedom of speech" is one of the catchcries the AVN uses when proclaiming themselves to be the persecuted underdogs. The fact that they, and [...]

Perth Vaccine Seminar - take two

A week or so ago I reported that the Perth Uniting Church had reversed a decision to allow the Australian Vaccination Network (AVN) to use one of its city venues for a vaccination seminar. The Church, which sponsors a vaccination program in West Timor, decided the AVN message did not fit within its ethical framework.

Not to be deterred, the AVN have found a new venue, at the State Library of WA, and plan to present the seminar next month.

Promotional material for the event claims...

In her talk, Meryl Dorey will discuss how vaccines are intended to work and why it is that they often don't.
People planning to attend this event in the hope of getting useful, up-to-date information on vaccination should know that the AVN have been associated, via a link on the AVN blog, with a conspiracy article that claimed the Swine [...]

Meryl Dorey doesn't learn, more trouble for the AVN.

Just over a year since the NSW Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing revoked the Australian Vaccination Network's charity status, forbidding them from collecting donations. The anti-vaccination group has been caught asking for donations at it's recent seminars in Western Australia.

Consumer Protection is investigating whether an anti-vaccination group breached charity laws by seeking donations at a series of meetings in WA in the past two weeks.

The NSW-based Australian Vaccination Network held public forums in Perth, Busselton, Jurien Bay and Geraldton, charging $15 and giving out brochures asking people to donate to the group. -The West [...]

Perth Anti-Vaccine Rally - "controversial"

Today's West carries a story about the "controversy" of the WA state government's decision to allow one of its venues to be used to promote an anti-vaccination message to parents.

Vaccination is hardly controversial in any real sense. The idea that vaccination is essentially harmful holds about as much water as the idea that smoking is essentially good for you.

I wonder if the tobacco lobby could hire the State Library to promote cigarettes?

I guess they could if they say smoking is controversial.

If you care about vaccination and live in Perth, you can join Podblack tonight at the Alexander Library and help to dilute the misinformation that is likely to be delivered in the anti-vaccination seminar.

Meryl Dorey, AVN and Supporters show true colours.

Meryl Dorey and supporters of the Australian Vaccination Network are showing their true colours and it's not a pretty sight. On the 1st of June this year I witnessed first hand the AVN poisoning the minds of concerned parents who came to the Perth AVN Seminar expecting to receive some useful information about vaccines. Unfortunately for them Meryl was only interested in pushing absurd paranoid conspiracies and making all sorts of false claims such as citing a lack of evidence for the effectiveness of vaccines. Of course anybody old enough to remember Polio or smart enough to conduct some research at the Library will discover that Meryl's claims about vaccines are complete and utter crap.

I wrote [...]

A question for Meryl Dorey

Friday's West Australian featured an article on Sarah Chivers and her nine month old son who is "vaccine-free" since vaccines are such terrible unnecessary things, along with an article claiming child vaccination rates have "plunged".

"The consequences of being vaccinated with side effects and something going wrong are greater than the risk of him catching something and allowing his immune system to fight it naturally," she said.

As far as that goes, Ms Chivers is correct. Vaccines have been so successful that it is unlikely he will catch an infectious disease, even if she chooses not to vaccinate. Unfortunately, it's an incomplete assessment since the "side effects" of catching such a disease include death.
Dana McCaffrey is one such case. Saturday's West Australian featured the sad case of Keira Skaife, a mother whose two month old child died of [...]

Church shuts doors to AVN

In news to hand, it appears the Uniting Church in Perth has withdrawn its support for an "information evening" to have been presented tomorrow evening by the Australian Vaccination Network's Meryl Dorey.

In short, the Church has apparently decided the AVN's anti-vaccination message does not fit within its ethical framework and has chosen not to make its venue available to them. The decision to hold the presentation in Perth comes hot on the heels of a genuine vaccination scare with dozens of WA children reporting adverse reactions following seasonal flu vaccinations.

The AVN promotes itself as pro-choice on the issue of vaccination but it sells T-shirts saying "Love them, protect them, NEVER inject them". Hardly a neutral stance. The AVN's blog also carries a link to an article by renowned conspiracy theorist David Icke claiming the swine flu vaccine was part of [...]

AVN in WA: Simple facts in the media

Cathy O'Leary has written a simple and factual article in The West Australian about the Australian Vaccination Network's (AVN) return to WA.

"An anti-vaccination group that sparked a political row in Perth last year is back in WA charging parents $15 for its public forums.
The Australian Vaccination Network held meetings in Busselton and Perth this week and will hold others in Jurien Bay and Geraldton next week. Last year, the Uniting Church in Perth refused to let the NSW group use one of its halls and the State Library came under fire when it let the group use one of its buildings instead.
The NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing also stripped the group, based at [...]

AVN Seminar to go ahead.

Well it seems the Australian Vaccination Networks anti-vaccination seminar is set to go ahead in Perth. Despite many Skeptics contacting the Library to warn them of the dishonest information that the AVN wishes to push onto parents. The next step to combating the AVN is to contact the Libraries board of directors and notify them of the misinformation that the AVN is going to use it for.

However if all else fails the next step is to attend and report on the seminar, which is exactly what I intend to do on June 1st. I expect many of the attendees will be anti-vaxers but some will be genuinely looking for answers and if skeptics are on hand perhaps we can help to minimise the damage that is caused by the [...]

AN in WA: Sanitation causes autism?

Meryl Dorey, from the Australian Vaccination Network is in WA holding "seminars" where she will no doubt warn parents of the "dangers" and "myths" of vaccination.

Anti-vaccinationists love correlations where they take to sets of data, which may or may not be directly related, and draw conclusions from the coincidences of those data sets.

One of their favourites is that autism (and, well, any number of diseases and syndromes) has supposedly increased since vaccination began.

Another is that vaccination wasn't responsible for the reduction in many childhood diseases. Instead, they claim it was sanitation and clean water alone that led to improvements in health.

So basically we have vaccination and sanitation sitting side-by-side. One supposedly causing autism and the other delivering better health.

How is it, therefore, that they don't [...]
