Doctor's Data Jihad Against Public Health Continues...

The story about Doctor's Data suing Quackwatch is growing. Today it was on the NESS feed, and the following unbelievable request on the part of the Doctor's Data charlatans

WHEREFORE, DOCTOR’S DATA, INC., Plaintiff, prays that this court enter an order granting Doctor’s Data a permanent injunction; direct them to remove or delete all disparaging statements and remarks pertaining to Doctor’s Data from these or any web sites under their control; and prohibit them from publishing these or any other or additional such remarks on blogs, [...]

A first: A cease and desist Tweet

Remember Doctors Data? It's the highly dubious medical laboratory that Trine Tsouderos exposed in her series on the quackery that is the "autism biomed" movement. A couple of weeks ago, Doctors Data also decided to launch what appears to be frivolous lawsuit against the creator and maintainer of the Quackwatch website, Steve Barrett; i.e. a SLAPP lawsuit.

Apparently unsatisfied with its legal thuggery against Steve Barrett, Doctors Data has apparently decided to plumb new depths by using new media to threaten other bloggers. This time around, Doctors Data has actually Tweeted a cease and desist threat against blogger Liz Ditz. Here's the Tweet:

@lizditz Cease and desist libelling us or we will sue you. http://tinyurl.com/docsdata. Doctor's Data [...]

Doctor's Data: Litigious Fuckwits Suing Quackwatch

Quackwatch, I'm sure you know, is an evidence-based, skeptical website that challenges questionable medical claims. Well, chelation assholes Doctor's Data have decided to open a can of whoop-ass in trying to silence Quackwatch, filing suit against Stephen Barret, the physician who runs the website in the public-interest.

I'm asking both of my readers to contribute $10 to the Quackwatch defense fund. I'm also asking you to write on your own blogs about this and include Doctor's Data in your tags, linking the phrase to Quackwatch's article, "Doctor's Data

Science Defender Gets Sued By Doctor’s Data

Dr. Stephen Barrett has been a longtime force for good with his website Quackwatch. If there’s alternative medicine or pseudoscientific theories that need debunking, he’s always been on top of it. Attempted intimidation by a quack

I don't envy Stephen Barrett at all, but this is going to be good. Barrett is the doctor behind QuackWatch a wonderful resource for exposing bogus medical claims. Among the many subjects of common charlatanry he's taken apart, one is the use of invalid tests to justify useless treatments, like chelation therapy, which is a goldmine for quacks. Do the doctory thing of drawing a little blood while wearing a white lab coat, send it off to a 'lab' that does a few tests and sends back a very official looking mass of data, and then the quack gazes into it and announces that you need powdered newts' eyes, or whatever nostrum he's peddling that day.

Barrett explained in thorough detail how the reports of one such 'lab', called "Doctor's Data", were jiggered to [...]

More legal thuggery against a defender of science-based medicine

After the events of last week, I'm a bit sensitive when it comes to matters like the one I'm about to discuss. Having the anti-vaccine cranks over at the Age of Autism weblog trying to get me fired over my blogging has a tendency to do that to me. (The details are out there if you haven't heard of it; I will say nothing more of it here.) In any case, if there's anything the events of last week drove home to me, it's that a sina qua non of anti-science cranks like the leaders of the anti-vaccine movement is that, when faced with serious scientific criticism, their preferred reaction is not to respond to that criticism with refutations based on science. They can't. Instead, their all too frequent response is to try to shut down criticism. We've seen it again and again, and I've discussed it many times on this blog.

Unfortunately, it's happening again. The favored laboratory of anti-vaccine practitioners and the "autism biomed" movement, a commercial laboratory known as [...]

With or without health care reform, doctors' jobs get harder

Early in the prolonged economic crisis a patient who had lost his factory job came to see me. He no longer had insurance, but he had plenty of health problems. Our office normally doesn't see uninsured patients (we simply can't afford to) but from time to time we make exceptions. I changed his prescriptions to the cheapest possible effective medications and gave him an online resource for the meds that did not have inexpensive alternatives. I referred him to a clinic that has the resources to care for the uninsured and that may be able to help him get his diabetic supplies.

By doing this, I shifted the cost of this man's care from my small office to a larger entity. But the money for his care still must come from somewhere. It's possible that his new clinic may get "disproportionate share (DISH)" dollars from the federal government if they care for many uninsured patients, but it's also likely that the clinic will never [...]

Legal Trouble Again: Spreading the News

Sending lawyers to do the work of science is never a good idea. This goes beyond or standard freedom of speech, it targets the most basic principles of science: freedom of discussion and freedom to criticize ideas.

Subluxation Theory: A Belief System That Continues to Define the Practice of Chiropractic

Sam Homola recently posted an article at Science-Based Medicine where he describes his attempts to remove pseudoscience (i.e. subluxations) from chiropractic so as to provide treatments that provide legitimate effective treatment for back pain. Checking out a good doctor for back pain

Dear all,

I am in the need for a doctor to try to fix my back pain due to a herniated disk, but I am skeptical on the methods. This is an area where a lot of nonsense thrive, and I don't want to put myself in the hands of a humbug.

My question to you is: how can I identify a good professional from a crook ? I know the basics: chiropractors, acupuncturists, homeopaths, but when it comes to such specialized treatment, do you have any hint on how to identify someone that is not selling BS, but the most recent, statistically relevant data ?

Thanks

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
