Latest Research: Chiropractic manipulation of the spine may cause strokes and even death

Anybody who has been hanging out in the skeptic landscape knows about Chiropractors vs Simon Singh. For those that don’t here is a brief summary … Simon Singh, the UK based science writer wrote an article – “Beware the Spinal Trap” in which he was critical of the practice of chiropractors. Basically … bad back perhaps, but ...Click to read more...

Not to worry! Chiropractic Board says stroke not a risk of cervical manipulation.

Back in January, the Connecticut Board of Chiropractic Examiners held a four-day hearing to decide whether chiropractors must, as a part of the informed consent process, (1)warn patients about the risk of cervical artery dissection and stroke following neck manipulation and (2) give patients a discharge summary listing the symptoms of stroke.1 On June 10th, [...]

Young Mom Dies After a Chiropractic Adjustment: Is "chiropractic stroke" to blame?

Young Mom Dies After a Chiropractic Adjustment
Is "chiropractic stroke" to blame?

MYFOXNY.COM - A Connecticut mother of three suddenly dies after a spinal manipulation, and now her husband wants the public to be aware of her story. Michael McCormick sometimes fights back tears when he remembers his wife Kim McCormick. Kim was only 32 years old and the mother of three young children when she passed away. "She was phenomenal, she was caring, sweet, funny. She was the glue. She kept everyone together," says McCormick who spoke exclusively to Fox 5 News reporter, Dr. Sapna Parikh. He says his wife Kim wanted nothing more than to be a stay at home mom for their 3 children. But all that ended one day in July of 2006 when Michael says, his otherwise healthy wife just wasn't feeling well, "Kim [...]

Stay away from chiropractic neck manipulation

From time to time I answer questions from reporters about alternative medicine.  In general, the coverage given my comments has been accurate and fair.  One such accurate a fair representation of my words appeared recently in Readers Digest: “Over the years, a number of my patients have had strokes after chiropractic neck manipulation. My mother claims Chiropractic healed her husbands sciatic nerve and corrected her jaw

Im looking for the science behind sciatic nerves and chiropractic jaw manipulation. That is to say, i want to know if there is easily refuted bullshit in these claims or if there is no research whatsoever. I couldnt find any criticism of chiro sciatic nerve treatment and knowing my mom, the best offense is addressing her peraonal ezperience claims not other general dangers such as strokes, death, etc. Her words were "it seems to be working for us"

I may have gotten a bit ahead of myself here Re: chiropractic.

I recently was debating about woo on another forum. Included in the list was chiropractic. Well, someone posted the following. Admittedly, I probably shouldn't have included it because I'm far from an expert on this particular subject. So I come to you guys for advice about where to even begin to tackle this, because I'm no extremely well-versed on this issue.

Hello guys, I'm mostly a lurker, I'm on here every day reading but never post unless I really want to get involved. To me this is really off topic for this thread, but since Polarbear_15 felt to include it in the OP I have to speak up.

I am a chiropractor, a degree I completed after my Bachelor of Science with a Major in Biology. I am currently working on my PhD in Spinal Biomechanics as well. The fact that you lumped chiropractic in with ghosts, goblins and witches demands an empirical debate sir.

Before you go off researching your idiotic claims about by [...]

Should the scientists counter-sue the chiropractors?

Let's just remind ourselves, the British Chiropractors Association is suing science writer Simon Singh because he wrote that the chiroprators don't have any evidence for many of their "treatments" but go ahead and use them anyway. (read Simon's side of the story here)

The BCA insisted that they did have evidence and went on to publish it. This "evidence" was promptly demolished by various bloggers: (see here for one of the demolition jobs and links to others)

But here's the thing:

Simon Singh also pointed out that chiropractic manipulation is not risk free and may, for example, be a cause of stroke

Worse still, manipulation of the neck can damage the vertebral arteries, [...]

Simon Singh: Beware the Spinal Trap

Edited version (the "libellous" bit about chiropractic being "bogus" has been removed)of the Simon Singh 2008 Guardian article for which Simon is being personally sued for libel by the British Chiropractic Association (please re-blog):

BEWARE THE SPINAL TRAP

Some practitioners claim it is a cure-all, but the research suggests chiropractic therapy has mixed results – and can even be lethal, says Simon Singh.

You might be surprised to know that the founder of chiropractic therapy, Daniel David Palmer, wrote that “99% of all diseases are caused by displaced vertebrae”. In the 1860s, Palmer began to develop his theory that the spine was involved in almost every illness because the spinal cord connects the brain to the rest of the body. Therefore any misalignment could cause a problem in distant parts of the body.

Simon Singh: "Beware the spinal trap"

As many of you will no doubt be aware, science writer Simon Singh is being sued by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA). The BCA objected to a piece that Singh published in the Guardian, pointing out that chiropractic has little or no evidence base, particularly when used to treat anything other than back problems, and that it can be dangerous. After Singh was sued, the Guardian took down the article pending the legal proceedings. As part of their campaign to "Keep the libel laws out of science", Sense About Science is asking bloggers to re-publish an edited version of the article, because scientific arguments should not be settled in the courtroom. I'm glad to do my bit.

Supporting Simon Singh

I can't state my support for Simon Singh enough. While I don't know the man personally, nor have I ever spoken to him, what he's going through in the name of science and skepticism shows a man whose principals put him head and shoulders above those in the various woo industries.

For those who don't know Simon is being sued by the British Chiropractic Association after he wrote a column in the Guardian. You can read more here.

In the meantime, like various other bloggers around the world, I'm republishing this article today. By doing so I show my support of both Simon and the desire to keep libel laws out of science.

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
