The British Chiropractic Association Humiliated.

People who work in public healthcare, or are involved with the promotion of health practitioners or techniques, do not have an absolute right to a reputation. It is most important that the claims, behaviours and results achieved are subject to the highest levels of public scrutiny. It is only in doing so that we can [...]

The British Homeopathic Association Undermine Public Confidence in Medicine

You know, having asked David Bellamy earlier in the week to use his influence as Patron of the British Homeopathic Association, to urge them to unequivocally condemn those lay homeopaths who travel to Africa to treat HIV, malaria and TB with sugar pills, you might be surprised to learn that I am not expecting any [...]

Chiropractic Awareness Week 2008-2010

The British Chiropractic Association has finally dropped their misconceived libel action against Dr Simon Singh. Best of all, the BCA have done this in Chiropractic Awareness Week. Last week, we saw the “first national conference” of the College of Medicine – the organisation that has arisen from the ashes of Prince Charles’ Foundation for Integrated Health. Chiropractic Neurology

Chiropractic is a diverse collection of beliefs and practices occurring under a broad regulatory label. The differences among various chiropractics are so stark that it is difficult to make general statements about chiropractic practice. At one end of the spectrum, however, are so-called “straight” chiropractors who adhere to the original philosophy of D.D. Palmer – [...]

A spirited exchange about chiropractic arose in response to a recent post proposing “The Cure” for the legalization of implausible and unproven diagnostic methods and treatments. Chiropractic cures for your DNA?

I just found this over at Forbes.com.

The headline above should be good for a laugh, but believe it or not, chiropracters around the world are claiming that they can help your body repair its DNA. All of them cite the same 2005 article as evidence, so I read the article to find out what it was all about.

A brief history of chiropractic

Chiropractic has origins in mysticism and vitalistic thinking. Given its popularity and seeming mainstream acceptance, it's easy to forget that these days. Fortunately, Daryl Cunningham reminds us of the history of chiropractic, including its philosophical underpinnings and potential complications:

Subluxation Theory: A Belief System That Continues to Define the Practice of Chiropractic

Sam Homola recently posted an article at Science-Based Medicine where he describes his attempts to remove pseudoscience (i.e. subluxations) from chiropractic so as to provide treatments that provide legitimate effective treatment for back pain. The Yale Journal of Medicine & Law blows it big time on alternative medicine

It's always frightening when lawyers delve into the realm of medicine.

Such was the thought running through my mind when I came across the most recent issue of the Yale Journal of Medicine & Law. The result is what I would most accurately characterize as--shall we say?--uneven. Even though the authors try to don the mantle of skepticism, for the most part they fail. Perhaps the best example of this failure is this particular article entitled Chiropractic Medicine: "Quackery's" Struggle for Fair Practice. Rarely have I seen an article as chock full of misinformation about chiropractic written by an apparent non-chiropractor. I'll show you what I mean. First, the author (Eduard Vangelder) begins with the classic logical fallacy of appealing to popularity:

Chiropractic medicine is a [...]

Steven Novella recently wrote about so-called “chiropractic neurology” and its most outspoken proponent, Ted Carrick.  In 2005 I published an article in The Scientific Review of Alternative Medicine (Vol 9, No 1, p. 11-15) entitled “Blind-Spot Mapping, Cortical Function, and Chiropractic Manipulation.” It was an analysis of a study Carrick had published. Subluxation Theory: A Belief System That Continues to Define the Practice of Chiropractic

When I graduated from Lincoln Chiropractic College in 1956, I had come to the conclusion that chiropractic’s subluxation theory, that misaligned vertebrae can cause organic disease, was not true. Chiropractic care and treatment for scoliosis

A link to my blog revealed an article promoting chiropractic care and treatment for scoliosis. It claims that, "it has been proven to be just as effective, if not more, than the existing treatment options [preventing] further progression" and also, "momentous improvement" from using chiropractic. Is this true? No.

In praise of chiropractic?

A Professor of Chiropractic appears upset with people questioning the safety of Chiropractic, as it really works for musculoskeletal disorders. The problem is with all the anti-democratic, exclusive, positivist scientists who have not made it into the post-normal age who are ontologically commited to only part of the knowledge base. That's very naughty!

About Skepticator

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
