ZOMG! E. KOLI R EVERYWHERZ!!! Or Something

Consider this the post wherein I channel my Inner ERV. During the last week, I've come across a couple sensationalist article about E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus being found on common surfaces. Here's one article about shopping carts and E. coli:

Researchers from the University of Arizona swabbed shopping cart handles in four states looking for bacterial contamination. Of the 85 carts examined, 72 percent turned out to have a marker for fecal bacteria.

The researchers took a closer look at the samples from 36 carts and discovered Escherichia coli, more commonly known as E. coli, on 50 percent of them -- along with a host of other types of bacteria.

"That's more than you find in a supermarket's restroom," said Charles Gerba, the lead researcher on the study [...]

Stop the Islamic Triumph Carts!

Via Ed Brayton and The Daily Show, we have been alerted to a new nefarious plan that all (the Right-) God-fearing Americans must stand up against: the Ground Zero Halal food carts!

As any student of (the Right) history knows, not only does Islam build mosques to celebrate their conquests, they build eating places [...]

Nature knows best

We all know that "[m]ost animals are natural herbalists, often seeking out particular herbs when needed". So how does it happen that 40 horses have died from eating a poisonous plant?

Were these a particularly stupid herd of horses? Or was it a mass suicide pact?

The Bridge

What was that sound? A hand-cranked railroad cart that needed oiling? An old firetruck with a broken siren? A group of boy scouts with a dying hippopotamus?

No, no, not a hippopotamus. Too artifactual sounding. Too human-made sounding. More like the siren, like an old fashioned air raid siren. And as I listened, not only did it get louder, but I had the distinct impression that it was getting closer.

NASA Mars Rover Arrives at New Site on Martian Surface

After a journey of almost three years, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has reached the Red Planet's Endeavour crater to study rocks never seen before.

On Aug. 9, the golf cart-sized rover relayed its arrival at a location named Spirit Point on the crater's rim. Opportunity drove approximately 13 miles (21 kilometers) since climbing out of the Victoria crater.

"NASA is continuing to write remarkable chapters in our nation's story of exploration with discoveries on Mars and trips to an array of challenging new destinations," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "Opportunity's findings and data from the upcoming Mars Science Laboratory will play a key role in making possible future human missions to Mars and other places where humans have not yet been."

Details here.

Links 8/24/10

We've been lucky this summer, and had very little gray cruddy days. But they're baaackkk! Let's celebrate with some links! Science:

Immunizations: "If your children have been vaccinated against xyz disease, why would you care if others are NOT vaccinated"
Nanofibre paint that kills MRSA
Male and female ability differences down to socialisation, not genetics (the article makes the subtle point that gender differences are very small, relative to variation. It's all about the R2, baby).

Nigel and Lady on Holiday and congrats Brian Thompson!

Faithful readers of Skeptical Review will notice it's been a mite quiet. Nigel and Lady W. are away on a much deserved holiday (or as Americans might say "vacation") to some place that is not Canada and lacks a robust DIY home improvement culture. Maybe Mexico? Maybe Hawaii? Paris, not likely. They'll be back at week's end and I, for one, will be waiting near their gate to see whose pushing their luggage cart.

In more important news, the Skeptical Review family wants to send out a big congrats to Brian Thompson of the Amateur Scientist Podcast for his sweet new job as the James Randi Educational Foundation's Field Coordinator.

What's all that mean? Well, from the JREF page:

In addition to helping local skeptics form new groups, [...]

The Cart and Horse of Personality and Politics

“Values deeply embedded in biology” That’s the subtitle to an article on recent psychological research I read last evening. And sure. Parents valuing their offspring, that’s definitely deeply embedded in our evolutionary biology. But the title tells how the research got personal - Personality predicts political preferences Wow. Though this is not the first bit [...]

Pornography: The Cart or Horse of Sexual Appetite?

Here’s a surprising finding (for me, anyway): Legalizing child pornography is linked to lower rates of child sex abuse Holy smokes. Who would think to legalize child pornography? The Juggernaut of Habit

In a certain Hindu festival, a massive cart bearing a statue of the Hindu god Krishna (Jagannath – “world lord”) is paraded through town. In the 1300s, a Brit (Mandeville) alleged that devotees of this god would sometimes throw themselves under the wheels of the rolling cart and sacrifice themselves to the god. The cart, because of [...]

National Day of Secularism

EoR has mentioned the political activities of the ostensibly non-politcal Exclusive Brethren before. The Australian Electoral Commission has also taken an interest:

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) will announce today it is referring questions to the federal police about whether members of the sect lied about their links to the election campaign. The AEC has been following the source of money used to pay for pro-Liberal and anti-Greens advertisements and leaflets worth $370,000 in Tasmania, South Australia and Mr Howard's Sydney seat of Bennelong, shortly before the 2004 election, Fairfax said. A $10 company set up three weeks before the poll and deregistered 18 months after it was one of the top five "third party" political spenders in the poll. The company, Willmac Enterprises, was set up by Sydney man Mark Mackenzie, a member of the sect.

Things we have decided already:

Group Bike Ride - On the Cart Paths of PTC

Fayette Freethought Society

This will be a mostly leisurely ride (with occasional huffing and puffing) on the golf cart paths.  Once we see who is participating we can decide on a good meeting place and route.  Count on at least 8 or 10 miles of riding, but I'm willing and able to do a longer ride if the group desires.

This will be a "no-drop" ride, meaning that we will ride (mostly) together and wait for all riders to ensure no one gets lost or left behind, and that we all finish the ride. That said, this ride is intended for adults who are looking to get some aerobic exercise and are at least somewhat confident in their abilities to ride the proposed distance (figure one to two hours of riding).  Motivated beginners (and those 'I haven't been on a bike in fifteen years' types) are most [...]

An organic workout, a strange encounter, and a movie

Replacing floors is a total exercise routine. Moving furniture out of the way, ripping up whatever is there, measuring and cutting new sub flooring, carting around heavy sheets of plywood, tacking and nailing, and so on and so forth works every single muscle in one's body. That's what we did last weekend. Also, I was able to demonstrate my special technique for testing if a particular floor is safe, or if it is so rotted out that it has to be replaced; You stand on it bouncing up and down a little bit and if you crash through to the basement, that part of the floor was bad.

Saw the strangest insect thing we've seen in a long time. A wasp of some sort was covered ... the entire body but not the head was covered ... with little tiny things that looked like mites or itty bitty spiders or ticks or something. They were two or three thick over the wasp's entire body. On first seeing this, I thought it was a wasp covered with bubble-bath. When Amanda first saw the insect [...]

About Skepticator

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
