Help I'm Being Regressed To The Mean

"Regression to the mean" was the bane of my undergraduate statistics class. We knew that it was out there, and that the final exam would have a question about it, but no-one understood it or had ever seen it. A bit like unicorns or fairies.

The lecture notes were unhelpful. They told us what it did - make things wrongly appear to change over time when actually stuff stayed the same - but not what it

A PCR Primer

The latest episode in the nail-biting scientific drama of "Does The XMRV Virus Cause Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?" has arrived, in the form of a paper in PNAS. A team of virologists led by the renowned Harvey Alter reported finding various XMRV-like viruses, but not XMRV itself, in chronic fatigue patients.

There's been plenty of excellent coverage of this new study, but most of it has come from specialists and has [...]

The Lockheed UFO Case Revisited

The 1953 Lockheed UFO case has become a favorite among UFO enthusuasts. Canadian filmmaker, Paul Kimball, featured it in his oft-cited documentary, Best Evidence: Top 10 UFO Sightings (it was number five). UFO researchers refer to the case as a solid example of an unexplainable UFO experience. And there is a good reason for the notoriety: the case features some very credible witnesses viewing a UFO from two widely different locations and soberly and scientifically reporting what they saw.

The case was unknown for decades, hidden in files of Project Blue Book. One of the most refreshing things about the it is that is hasn't been tainted by dubious interviews from decades after the event, like the Roswell case, for [...]

The Appeal of Paul Chambers

The first part of the appeal of Paul Chambers was heard by Doncaster Crown Court on Friday 24 September 2010.

It had been hoped that a decision could have been made on the day, but that turned out not to be possible, and so the case will be concluded on a day yet to be decided.

This blogpost includes a fair and accurate account of what was heard in court on Friday.

However, I [...]

What I Do When I Find Spots in my Photographs

What do I do when I see spots on my photos?  The cruddy photo to the right shows a number of spots.   Mostly they show up when shooting with a small aperture against a large expanse of plain color, like a blue sky.

I always use the automatic sensor cleaning feature on my Nikon D5000 and D7000.  Not sure if it works at all because I haven't tested it against turning it off for a while.  Regardless, I think everyone will run to this situation sooner or later.  The most likely causes of these spots are dust and [...]

A second Oklahoma bill attacks evolution and climate change

A bill in Oklahoma that would, if enacted, encourage teachers to present the "scientific strengths and scientific weaknesses" of "controversial" topics such as "biological evolution" and "global warming" is back from the dead. Entitled the "Scientific Education and Academic Freedom Act," House Bill 1551 was introduced in the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 2011 by Sally Kern (R-District 84), a persistent sponsor of antievolution legislation in the Sooner State, and referred to the House Common Education Committee. It was rejected there on February 22, 2011, on a 7-9 vote. But, as The Oklahoman (February 23, 2011)

Kodak Zi8 Love-Hate Relationship

Purty, innit? I got the raspberry one pictured above.

Disclaimer: This is not a corporate product review. I purchased my Kodak Zi8 for full retail price two months ago for $179.95. i had many requests to explain the technical side of my starship picture, and i decided that, instead of responding individually, i'd write up a DYI. now, i'm no photo expert, and this is just how i did it.  if you have a better idea or information you'd like to contribute, or if you think i've made a mistake somewhere, please let me know.  i'm not here to teach -- i'm here to learn!

this method does not take one huge long exposure -- it uses a bunch of 30-second exposures which are subsequently stacked to form [...]

Pascals Wager

I keep seeing Christians throwing Pascals Wager around, as if it actually holds water. For those of you unfamiliar with the proposition, here it is:

"If you believe in God and there is indeed a God, you have everything (heaven and immortality) to gain.
If you believe in God and there is in fact no God, you have nothing to lose.

If you don't believe in God and there is indeed a God, you have everything to lose (Hell).
If you don't believe in God and there is in fact no God, you have nothing to lose.

Hence, if you live as though God exists, you could potentially gain infinity, so it's the rational choice."

Sound reasonable? Not quite.

Assumptions:
1. The first thing I [...]

The Strangest Moral Dilemma of My Adolescence

Indiana is a weird state. Among its many strange laws is that you cannot get a driver’s license at 16. No, you must be sixteen years old… and one month. I am not making this up. To be fair, I grew at least 3 pubes during that month, so clearly I matured a lot in that time.

When I finally hit that magic date of one exact month after my birthday (fuck you to people born in February, only waiting 28 days…), my mom drove me to the DMV to take the tests, first the written, then the driving portion.

As I sat down to take the written test, I approached it like I approach all written tests: with the confidence that for some reason, I always come out looking really smart when knowledge is being measures via which circles I color in. I always do well on standardized tests; I was really just dreading the driving portion.

The test came in a manila filing folder, the kind [...]

About Skepticator

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

More on this beta

  • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
  • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
  • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
  • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
  • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
  • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
  • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
