Weak quantum theory and quantum critical point fluctuations...

... do not in fact have anything to do with each other

While writing my eLetter regarding Alex Hankey's (1) support and defence of Lionel Milgrom (2), I took a look at a short letter written by Hankey entitled “Weak Quantum Theory: Satisfied by Quantized Critical Point Fluctuations” (3). Only the first page is freely available, but I’m assuming his reference to Walach is Ref. (4) and the reference to weak quantum theory is Atmanspacher et al. (

Vaccine ingredients - do your research

The anti-vaccine lobby repeatedly crows "do your research" to anyone who they see as not being strongly opposed to vaccination.

Ordinarily, I ignore their advice because, well, they're mostly idiots with too much hubris and too little education. But today I decided to follow their advice and find a comprehensive list of ingredients commonly found in all vaccines. I was shocked...

COMMON Vaccine Ingredients:

  • Phemaldehyde (listed in comments here)
  • Water (a major cause of death)
  • Sucrose (a major cause of [...]

    My Windows has a virus!

I received a phone call this afternoon asking if I was me, as unsolicited phone calls so often do. Being a hard-bitten, closed-minded, cynical sort of guy, I naturally answered "no, I wasn't home but I could take a message (for me)". He asked if I was family and I said I was my friend.

He went on to advise me that my Windows computer had downloaded a virus and would get slower and slower until it stopped working. The nice young Indian gentleman, Rick Diesel, said that he was calling on behalf of a company who were the service providers for my computer.

Naturally I was concerned that Andy's computer was in danger so I said I'd take a look on his behalf. I missed the next bit of conversation as I walked into the room where the computer was and sat in front of it. The conversation went something like this...

"See the CTRL key a the bottom left?"

    "Yes"

"Hold it down. Now see the Windows key?"

The Strangest Moral Dilemma of My Adolescence

Indiana is a weird state. Among its many strange laws is that you cannot get a driver’s license at 16. No, you must be sixteen years old… and one month. I am not making this up. To be fair, I grew at least 3 pubes during that month, so clearly I matured a lot in that time.

When I finally hit that magic date of one exact month after my birthday (fuck you to people born in February, only waiting 28 days…), my mom drove me to the DMV to take the tests, first the written, then the driving portion.

As I sat down to take the written test, I approached it like I approach all written tests: with the confidence that for some reason, I always come out looking really smart when knowledge is being measures via which circles I color in. I always do well on standardized tests; I was really just dreading the driving portion.

The test came in a manila filing folder, the kind [...]

Wintery Knight is a liar, a coward and a scoundrel

    Guest Post By Contrararian.

Self-appointed "apologists" christian warrior Wintery Knight has to be the most blatant example of a "liar for Christ" that I have come across in over ten years of blogging.

The author of a six-page treatise on how morality cannot exist without God has something seriously wrong with his own moral compass.

He seems to think it is ok for him to edit comments on his blog to change their meaning and avoid questions he can't answer.

Consider this comment I made on a thread discussing the Kalam Cosmological Argument:

    A Brief History

As the subtitle of this blog suggests, I went to college once -- a university in fact. I was there a total of four years without a Bachelor to show for it. Why I left is a combination of a few things, one of which was my uncanny knack for changing my mind. When I left, however I was in a major I was happy with. Well, mostly happy with.

Towards the latter end of those four years I became increasingly unhappy. The majority of it was social in origin but I was also going through a quarter life crisis and struggling heavily over what the hell I wanted to do with my life.

Ever since I was a kid (we are talking 4 years old) I wanted to be a paleontologist. Dinosaurs were it. No, dinosaurs were an obsession. Come High School my interests wavered and I ended up starting my college experience with dreams of being a chef. After the first [...]

How Skepticism has improved my health and my life

I've thought about writing this post for a while, but I keep bailing on it because I thought no one wants to hear about my health problems. And you may not. But this is a happy story, at least to me so I thought I would write it. A recent post by Tom Foss is what made me reconsider.

For as long as I can remember I've had stomach problems. Without getting too graphic, this is an intense pain in my gut, that stays there until I make two trips to the bathroom, with each trip lasting 10-25 minutes. Its gross, its [...]

    Ghost Stories

I remember years ago I was in my parent's house. I was downstairs getting something off the floor just inside the door-frame of the laundry room. I was bent over and, very quietly but clearly, I heard a voice above my head say, "Boo." No intonation or volume, just one word. It scared the crap out of me. When I looked around, there was nothing but the open door, an empty wire hanger on the door frame above me, and lots of dead air. Freaky.

Today I was at a private client's house doing a massage. His downstairs is spacious with two couches, a nice television and the entire wall opposite where I was set up was stone with a wood fireplace in the centre. About a half hour into the treatment, the client raised his head off the table and said, "Did the fireplace just start up?" I looked over and, indeed, yes, across the room where no one had been, a fire was in the fireplace. Not a gas fireplace. Wood.

He returned his head to the table saying, [...]

    "A Butterfly Effect of Bullshit"

That is how I described the workings of my brain this morning to my boss.
    Some background:
Last week, I gave my apartment key to a colleague who took care of my cats while I was out of town. He dropped it in my mailbox in the departmental break room yesterday, and today I was going to pick it up. For the last two mornings, I have not been able to lock the door when I have left (though Animala is here to lock things up when she wakes up).
So, I'm up early this morning and I know my apartment key is going to be waiting for me in the break room. I go to the shelf where I keep my keys, wallet, mp3 player and sunglasses, like I automatically do every morning. When I pulled the mp3 player off the shelf, my keys were sitting on the headphone cord and fell off of the shelf.
Somewhere in Georgia, a butterfly farted.
I faced the front door as I picked up the [...]

Skepticator is an RSS aggregator run by Jason Brown, a skeptical atheist interwebs guy based in Sydney, Australia. It is supported by ads and runs on beer, cigarettes and sandwiches, in that order.

This is BETA version 0.9.1 of Skepticator. Coming versions will have features such as popularity tracking, customisation and social link sharing

    More on this beta

    • Skepticator is gathering data in the background, so can take 10-15 mins to refresh the feed
    • Tweeting directly from skepticator might be buggy. Please report errors!
    • It can manage Atom and RSS feeds but sometimes hiccups over broken entries
    • Blogs with a lot of markup in their feeds may get truncated summaries (I'm looking at you, Guardian blogs)
    • Approval of new feeds is slightly slow in this stage
    • Currently scans twitter and bloglists every 15 minutes. This will be increased to around every five minutes once the algorithms are streamlined, then tuned based on the ongoing load
    • Podcast support is on the way - don't email me asking for it, I'm already on it
